Go Social or Go Home (But Come to our Webinar)

I remember talking to one of our top advisors at a conference a few years ago about marketing – what works, what doesn’t, and more Sharespecifically –would he use Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc., to market his business. His exact reply, I believe, was “Never” (except for remembering at the last minute that he did have a LinkedIn account that he didn’t update). And the reason why this marketing-savvy advisor wouldn’t dip his toes into social media? Well, because his Broker Dealer wouldn’t permit him to do so.

Fast forward two years, and this advisor (whom I won’t name) is now all over Facebook – posting videos, sharing investment updates, and even client event pictures. What’s even more interesting, so is his Broker Dealer!

It’s not next, it’s now

So what happened? The demographics of social media users have shifted. The average user is getting older. Confirmed by the Pew Research Center, social networking use among internet users 50 and over is growing by leaps and bounds.* Even my parents are on Facebook. And for investment companies and financial advisors looking for new avenues to get in front of potential investors, social media has become a lot less scary.

I for one happen to love social media. I love that it brings us closer together. It levels the playing field and puts everything – entertainment, education, etc. – right there at your fingertips.
